As a cinematographer, I’ve found Colourlab.ai to be an invaluable tool for creative exploration during pre-production. While I primarily work with dedicated colorists on features and commercials, Colourlab has transformed how I develop and communicate visual ideas early in the process, especially for indie projects where we can’t engage a colorist early on. The ability to quickly test different film stocks, explore print emulations, and craft show looks has become essential to my prep workflow – and it’s just fun!

The AI-powered matching is remarkably intuitive. I can pull reference frames from films that inspire our project’s look, and Colourlab translates those qualities to our test footage. This preserves the creative aspects while eliminating technical hurdles, making it incredibly useful for developing visual languages with directors before we hit set.

The film emulation tools are impressive, offering authentic looks rather than preset filters. For smaller projects where I handle color myself, Colourlab streamlines my workflow without compromising creative control. But its real value for me is as a developmental tool – a place to experiment and refine the visual approach before we roll cameras.
